Nocturne No. 1 for Winds Named ‘Runner-up’ by National Band Association (5/6/12)

As I’ve been preparing for the world premiere of Fabric of a World Unfolding in a few short weeks, I received exciting news from the National Band Association. Nocturne No. 1 for Winds was named a runner up in their 2012 Young Composers Mentor Project. Its an honor to be recognized. Many thanks to the NBA and to the Syracuse University Wind Ensemble for all their support in making the work possible.

NYC Debut at Music with a View (4/22/12)

I will be making my New York City debut at the upcoming performance at Kathleen Supove’s 2012 Music with a View Festival. A brand new work, Fabric of a World Unfolding, for pierrot ensemble and electronics will be premiered on May 22nd. I’m thrilled to be a part of an amazing group of composers and performers. All of the details can be found here. In addition, some exciting new projects coming up, including a work for tenor and orchestra, for Jon English, (who premiered The Kiss in 2011) and a new work for soprano and electronics for the San Francisco based soprano, Gabbi Traub.

Radio and Internet Streaming, Oh My! (2/04/12)

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be on WCNY-FM (91.3 FM in Syracuse, NY) at the noon hour on February 17th with Bill Baker.  If you aren’t in the Syracuse area, you can listen to it here: http://www.wcny.org/radio. Bill Baker has been a huge supporter of mine, I’ve appeared on his show in July 2010 and 2011. Nocturne No. 1 was originally premiered on his show in July and it’ll be great to see him again. In addition, the premiere will be streamed live through the Syracuse University website: http://vpa.syr.edu/events/symphony-band-and-wind-ensemble.

Nocturne No.1 for Winds (1/03/12)

Excellent news! There is a date set for the world premiere of “Nocturne No.1 for Winds”. The Syracuse University Wind Ensemble will premiere the work on Saturday, February 18th at 2 pm in Setnor Hall. I’m excited to be back at my Alma Mater and to hear my music played by old friends.

Happy New Year (12/29/11)

Happy holidays to all! I’ve been hard at work completing a solo piano work for Sar Shalom-Strong, an amazing pianist at Hamilton College. In the meantime, check out the updated page for “Nocturne No.1 for Winds” which is to be premiered some time this spring. Also, I’ve updated the contact information, if you are interested in performing or commissioning a work, please contact me at ChristopherECresswell@gmail.com.

Brief Updates (10/10/11)

It has been far to long since I’ve updated. The wind version of Nocturne No. 1 is finished! I’m working now on the piece for four double basses. Once concert dates are lined up I will be sure to post them. Until then you can catch me playing tuba with the Manhattan Wind Ensemble. Stay tuned to the blog for more updates.

Moving to NYC and New Commissions
(7/28/11)

I am moving to New York City this weekend. From here on out, I will be a Brooklyn-based composer. (Where exactly in Brooklyn is still up in the air.) Hopefully this means new opportunities for performances, meeting a whole new community of musicians and lots and lots of great music. (I’m already signed up for a Javanese Gamelan Ensemble). In the meantime, I am working on a transcription of Nocturne No. 1 for wind ensemble, (tentatively called “Nocturne for Winds”, creative, I know). I also have a commission from Syracuse-based pianist, Sar-Shalom Strong.
